An Exciting Adrenaline-Inducing Experience Awaits
Much of the iFly experience is designed to emulate the boarding process at an airport. Once you enter the iFly building, it feels like you’ve just entered the airport gates with the cooling air providing much relief from Sentosa’s harsh sun. The ticketing counter looks just like an airport counter where you check-in to receive your boarding pass, except this time it’s in the form of a wristband that grants you access into iFly’s flight chamber. The giant screen above your head showcases the available time slots for the skydiving experience, almost like the old-school split-flap airport departure board.
If you’ve made your bookings online, be sure to check in at least an hour prior to the flight time for the briefing and gearing up. Once you’ve registered at the ticketing counter and received your wristband, you can head up the stairs to level two where the wind tunnel is.
As you climb up the stairs, you’ll hear the buzzing of excitement from other flyers as they watch the group of flyers before them in the flight chamber. If you still have some time to spare before your flight, you can enjoy snapping photos of the area, grabbing a drink from the in-house cafe or watching other first-time flyers try their best to navigate their bodies in the wind tunnel. And if you’re really lucky, you may get to see professional and seasoned flyers perform jaw-dropping flips and tricks!

Once it’s almost time for your flight, scan your wristband on the first floor to enter the briefing room where you will be greeted by a short introduction video to go over some important safety guidelines!

A trained professional will also brief all flyers on the dos and don’ts of free-falling, including some hand signals to take note of when you’re in the flight chamber. There are a total of 4 hand signals to remember – keep your chin up, breathe and relax, straighten your legs and bend your legs. There are also 2 hand signals that you can use – a thumbs up to let them know that everything is okay or a thumbs down to signal that you want to get out ASAP.
As it’s extremely loud in the wind tunnel, it’s almost impossible to communicate verbally. That’s why these hand signals are extremely important to remember so that you can easily communicate with your instructor for the safest and most fulfilling flying experience. You’ll even be guided with a hands-on tutorial where you can try laying down on a training bed to simulate the correct flying positions once you’re in the wind tunnel.
Gearing Up
As the anticipation builds up for the actual experience, it’s time to suit up! A full set of gear will be provided including a helmet with a face shield, goggles and a full-body flight suit to wear over your clothes.
That being said, there is a dress code for flyers. Be sure to dress comfortably without any accessories that might flap around and become loose, such as earrings, necklaces, bracelets, watches and rings. If you have any on you, don’t worry. There are lockers available for rent to safe-keep any bags and valuables. Well-fitted sneakers should be worn (so no slippers!), but rental shoes are available if needed. If you wear glasses, you can easily request a special pair of goggles that allow for more comfort. Feel free to use the sanitised earplugs if you wish, as the wind in the flight chamber can be pretty loud.
Now, it’s time to fly!
Here comes the fun part! As the instructor ushers you into the seating area of the flight chamber, your excitement might just turn into fear. As the machinery fires up, the sound of the wind blasting from below can be slightly intimidating, but don’t let that get to you. If you are not the first in line, then it’s best to observe the flyers in your group so that you know what to expect and how to react when the wind lifts you up. Plus, when other flyers exit the wind tunnel with full-blown smiles, you’ll know that there’s truly nothing to worry about!
Is it scary? Not at all! There’s no jumping or falling. You simply float on a column of air, making the dangers of skydiving absolutely moot. It feels just like sticking your head out of a moving car. Simply relax your body and let the wind take you on an unforgettable ride! As a beginner, you probably won’t be able to easily manoeuvre around or do some sick flips and tricks. But that’s alright! Don’t fret about messing up, the instructors are vigilant and always keep your safety in mind. Step into the flight chamber when you’re ready and quickly position yourself as you were taught.
The instructors will guide and hold on to you as you fly high and low while providing hand signals to correct any incorrect posture or to get you to relax if you’re a little too tense. With the wind blowing in your face, try your best not to cramp your face up or loosen up the jaw up too much, unless you want your drool flying around too. With all eyes on you, be sure to give everyone watching your winning smile as there are in-built cameras to capture the moment. Your first skydive can be pretty nerve-wracking. Your arms will flail around, you’ll struggle to balance, and it’ll be an awkward experience. But it’ll only get better on the second skydive!
Once you get used to the feeling of hovering around, you’ll feel your muscles ease up, allowing you to fully embrace the wind. On the second skydive, your instructor will even bring you up 5 storeys high a few times which will really get the adrenaline pumping. This truly is an experience that you cannot get anywhere else!
